It is mid autumn now, and winter is round the corner. Good times for getting together with friends, log fires, walks in the woods upstate NY, preparing a beef bourguignonne for a beloved one and curling up with a nice glass of red and a good book. Are you ready for all of this? Let’s take a look at your closet and make sure you have all the essentials in there.

- Walking boots: Get a nice pair of classic blucher ankle boots. Casual, and far more stylish than your average boot on high street stores.
- A nice warm coat, which doubles as a city coat too. Check out Burlington Factory and www.oaknyc.com
- Cordroys in an auturm pallete: browns, dark or olive greens, greys and throw a brick one if you crave a funkier version. Tons of versions at J. Crew.
- A fisherman’s sweater. Check out S.N.S. Herning, available at www.oaknyc.com . They’re great, warm yet stylish

Happy Fall!

How a fashion no-no, can become a statement of style October 7, 2007

I remember my grandmother, who is one of the most stylish ladies I have ever met, telling me about all the fashion rules that I should know, in order to make the right combinations and always to be considered among the well dressed crowd.

There were a few, but the ones that I always remembered were:
- Don’t wear black tights with white shoes
- Never pair stripes with stripes or other patterns
- Have your bag match your shoes

At circa 2007, all these rules have been broken. We see black tights paired with white shoes, stripes and patterns are happily paired together, and bags don’t match shoes necessarily. However, there are some tricks to make these former fashion faux-pas to fashion statements:

Black tights with white shoes: If you are 25 or younger go for it. It is an age to experiment and wear extreme fashion, however, keep things simple by wearing greys, crèmes, black or similar shades to avoid the carnival effect. If you are 25 and older, go for the combination of dark tights and lighter shoes, but not too light. This season, I particularly like the combination of charcoal grey or midnight blue with dark red pumps.

Stripes on stripes or patterns: you can do this, if you mix and patch stripes of similar colors or complimentary ones. For example you can pair a horizontally blue & white striped boat-neck T (or red or yellow) with a pair of blue trousers with a slight white vertical stripe. Avoid polka dots, paisley designs and anything too busy when you go for this look. You’ll make everyone nauseous.

Your bag doesn’t have to match your shoes anymore. Well yeah, but that doesn’t mean that anything goes. You shouldn’t mix seasons, i.e. thong sandals with tweed bag, or purpose of accessory i.e. evening bag with your favorite sneakers and try to keep colors complimentary. If you are not sure what colors are complimentary, check out this link.

Try these tricks and even my stylish grandma will be pleasantly surprised.

Spring-Summer 2008 / Women / Milan Fashion Week October 1, 2007

Thank God for Italian designers! Here are my favorite shows from Milan’s fashion week for spring / summer 2008. Start saving now!

  • GUCCI - For images click here
A very different collection, very inspiring and definitely Frida Giannini will have us talk about her collections in the years to come. Loved the biker jackets and the flowery mini dresses, while the compination of black and white with hues of sunflower yellow is very Italian chic.

  • Anna Molinari For images click here
Sweet meets Grecian meets T-shirt dress, one of the best collections for spring 08 so far. Lovely chiffon dresses, which can be worn by all of us everywhere, a wonderful collection which makes me look forward to many lovely breezy mediterannean days and starry nights.

  • Emilio Pucci - For images click here
When you want to change from the goddess-like airy dresses of Anna Molinari and wear something more structured and geometric, but fun and versatile, then Matthew Williamson of Pucci should be your designer of choice. Boho of Capri, now that’s what I call an It collection.

  • MaxMara - - For images click here/em
This is the collection for your office wardrobe, gone funkier, asian inspired and definitely stylishly deconstructive. Loved the jackets and the dresses; always appropriate, never boring.

  • Versace- For images click here
There is one word to describe Donnatela’s spring 08 collection: WOW!!! There wasn’t anything in the collection from the belted silk shift dresses, to the gowns, to the jumpsuits that did not look fabulous…Elegantly sexy and fantastic colors of the fruits’ spectrum. I wish I could buy everything.
