I love the spring shows that the V&A puts on every year and I have been waiting excitedly for the ‘Hats: an anthology by Stephen Jones’ which opened today. As Stephen himself puts it: “A hat makes clothing identifiable, dramatic – and most importantly Fashion…It is the cherry on the cake, the dot on the ‘i’, the exclamation mark, the fashion focus. Everyone from showgirls to dictators knows that by wearing a hat they will be the centre of attention“. Couldn’t agree more Stephen. Call or book tickets in advance to avoid the lines. I am suspecting this will be a blockbuster and must-see for the fashionistas. The show is up until May 31, 2009.

Oscars 2009 – The gown wrap up February 23, 2009

The dress parade was as good as expected. Hollywood put on its Oscars best, Fashion Police went out hunting & I went along. Check out the pictures here from the OSCARS official webpage.

Dream Girls:

I loved Frieda Pinto in her dreamy hyacinth John Galliano: she was the belle of the ball. Marion Cottiyard was a stunner too: this all glamour French lady, was fresh, a little risqué and very elegant. I was not crazy about the up-do as her hair would have looked better if worn down with that gown, but never mind.
Diane Lane dressed her age and body in her Dolce & Gabbana. She did not steal the show, but she was very put together. Viola Davis was darn hot and sexy. The same goes for Taraji P. Henson and Alicia Keys. Well done ladies.

Elegant yet stiff:

Angelina Jolie, looked beautiful in black, but she is always serious looking, and too serious in a frivolous red carpet parade is just un-cool and boring in my book. As for Oscar winner Penelope Cruz, vintage is always a good choice and suits her, but vintage hair to go with it is a bit much, don’t you think?

Inexplicable:

Jessica Biel was wearing a Prada dress that just looked like a sack. This is shame because Miss Biel is one stunning woman. Fire the stylist now!

Inspiration from the bakery department:

I guess this was the year of the cream puff design, because Miley Cyrus and Melissa George both sported the look. Miley’s gown was an awful choice, too old for a 16 year old and poor Melissa looked like a cross between a cream dessert and an upside down mushroom.

Mama-daughter gown swap: Vanessa Hudgens’ Marchesa was a nice dress but it should have been worn by a 30 year old woman. Heidi Klum was too exposed (again…) and she wore too much jewelry: humongous earrings, bracelets, the works. Honey: less is more in the jewelry department and the older we get the more we should cover up.

Lets play dress up clothes:

Sarah Jessica Parker looked as an aged Barbie doll with plastic hair, while the dress did not fit well around the boobies. I am guessing that this was a look that Patricia Field did not put together.

Valentines Day gift ideas: if flowers and chocolate are not enough… February 11, 2009

Filed under: You ask. We answer. — ivivarda @ 9:40 pm

Every year around the beginning of February we all start stressing about for Valentines gifts. One truth is that Valentines Day falls very close to the holidays, so we all are short of ideas for smashing gifts. The other truth is that it is women who really like Valentines Day and expect gifts… Men couldn’t care less and would be happy with a card, nice meal, and some naughtiness afterwards. Us women? We want thoughtful gifts, that mean things, blah, blah, blah. To all those poor blokes who want to give something a little special, this piece is for you.

Lingerie: This is the default gift for Valentines Day, and you can never go wrong. Just make sure that you buy the right size. No girl likes to receive knickers that are so small they make her feel like a sausage in bondage, or too big that bring a clothes line to mind. Red is the color of the day, and hot pink is also very sexy.

Jewelry: Diamonds are a girl’s BFF, right? She would like anything from you, even a little piece of junk, as long as it is thoughtful. To add a little special spark in her eye, a heart necklace would be perfect. Check out ljblondon.com for ideas.

A staple piece but in color, like this cute trench coat. Not only will she think you are fashion savvy, she will adore a staple piece that makes her whole wardrobe come together. This cutie in his candy pink hue is from OASIS. Yum.
